Get help with access

Oxford University Press (OUP) publishes world-leading journals, digital books, and reference products, all of which are available for purchase and subscription to libraries and institutions worldwide.

To get access, individuals can recommend content on Oxford Academic to their librarian, either directly or by using our online form. Our journals and a small selection of our digital books are also available for individual subscription.

Individuals can also activate a code or subscription number that they’ve been sent from OUP, been given by their institution, or obtained from a book they’ve purchased.

Oxford Academic provides online access to our journals and books. To buy a book in print please visit the OUP website.

How to sign-in

Once access is purchased or provided by your library, individuals can sign-in with:

  • A personal account (when access is granted through a personal subscription or token/code)
    • Note that institutional account administrators must also sign in with a personal account that has an administration agreement with the institutional account in question to perform admin tasks.
  • Institutional access methods (when access is granted through an institutional purchase, subscription, or trial), with the following sign-in methods
    • IP authentication
    • Referring URLs
    • Proxy services
    • Shibboleth and OpenAthens
    • Institutional username and password
    • Society log-in
    • Library card log-in

You may log in with multiple accounts, and in so doing you will have access to all entitlements associated with those accounts. One log-in of each of the types listed above is permitted simultaneously.

Using the Sign out feature will log you out of all accounts, except those that you access via IP authentication.

Navigating to content which you have access to

Being signed into an account doesn’t mean you will have access to all the content on Oxford Academic. This is dependent upon the terms associated with your relevant account(s). Therefore, once you've signed in, finding the content you have access to is important.

When running a search you can choose to filter by availability:

  • Purchased – this is content you have access to through an institutional purchase, subscription, or trial, or via a personal subscription
  • Open Access – the content is available to all on an Open Access licence
  • Free – the content is freely available to everyone, often for a limited time

If you don’t have access to a piece of content, then this will be indicated by a blue ‘Get Access’ label.
